The Singapore team of Josh Chua, Ellsworth Le, Nicholas Tan, Yang Ze Yi and Tan Zhao Ray did the Republic proud when they clinched joint-3rd in the team event at the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships 2026 in Delhi, India.
Without key players Izaac Quek, Koen Pang and Clarence Chew, the young guns more than lived up to the occasion in India, as they breezed through their group in style, with 5 wins out of 5 against Scotland (3-0), Northern Ireland (3-0), Bangladesh (3-0), Canada (3-0) and Botswana (3-0).
In the second stage, they were made to battle against New Zealand, eventually prevailing 3-2, and also against Australia, winning 3-1, but suffered their first loss of the competition against India, 3-0, with their place in the semifinals secured.
In the semifinals, they put up a strong fight against Causeway rivals Malaysia, but they had no answer to a full strength Malaysian team comprising of seasoned campaigners Javen Choong and Wong Qi Shen, with the Singaporeans fell to a 3-1 defeat.
In the women’s team event, a young Singapore team, comprising of all five players under the age of 20, finished in a commendable 5th place.
After missing out on a place in the semifinals after losing to both Malaysia and England in the second stage, they bounced back to defeat Canada 3-2 in the 5th/6th Placing Match.
The team of Janelle Chiang, Chong Zi Sian, Eudora Lee, Rhiannon Tey and Sie Lay Yin performed above expectations in the competition and can hold their heads high.
